Camarata is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1971 by the American conductor and pianist, Dr. John L. Camarata. The ensemble is known for its innovative and dynamic performances of classical music, as well as its commitment to promoting music education and outreach programs. Dr. Camarata was born in 1920 in New York City and began his musical career as a pianist. He studied at the Juilliard School of Music and later earned a doctorate in music from Columbia University. In the 1950s, he began conducting orchestras and choirs, and in 1960, he founded the Camarata Chorale and Orchestra in New York City. In 1971, Dr. Camarata moved to Seoul, South Korea, where he founded the Camarata Music Company. The company included a music school, a recording studio, and the Camarata Chamber Orchestra. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. The Camarata Chamber Orchestra is made up of professional musicians from around the world, many of whom are based in South Korea. The ensemble performs a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary, and often collaborates with other artists and ensembles. One of the highlights of the Camarata Chamber Orchestra's early years was its performance of Handel's Messiah in 1973. The performance was a huge success and became an annual tradition for the ensemble. In 1975, the Camarata Chamber Orchestra performed at the opening ceremony of the Seoul Arts Center, one of the largest performing arts centers in Asia. Over the years, the Camarata Chamber Orchestra has performed with many renowned soloists, including violinist Sarah Chang, pianist Lang Lang, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The ensemble has also collaborated with other ensembles, such as the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and the Korean National Opera. In addition to its performances, the Camarata Music Company is also committed to music education and outreach programs. The company's music school offers lessons in a variety of instruments and styles, and the Camarata Chamber Orchestra often performs for schools and community groups. One of the most notable outreach programs of the Camarata Music Company is the Camarata Music Company Youth Orchestra. The youth orchestra was founded in 2009 and is made up of talented young musicians from around South Korea. The ensemble performs regularly and has won numerous awards, including first place in the 2014 Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna, Austria. In recent years, the Camarata Chamber Orchestra has continued to innovate and expand its repertoire. In 2017, the ensemble performed a concert of music from the popular video game series, Final Fantasy. The concert was a huge success and led to a series of sold-out performances in South Korea and Japan. The Camarata Chamber Orchestra has also been recognized for its contributions to the arts. In 2018, the ensemble was awarded the Seoul Metropolitan Government's Cultural Merit Award for its outstanding contributions to the cultural development of the city.
