The Vanderbilt University Wind Symphony is a classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over three decades. Founded in 1984, the ensemble has become a staple of the Vanderbilt University music scene, and has gained a reputation for excellence in performance and musicianship. The ensemble was founded by Dr. Thomas Verrier, who served as the director of bands at Vanderbilt University from 1983 to 2015. Dr. Verrier was a highly respected conductor and educator, and he saw the need for a wind ensemble that could showcase the talents of Vanderbilt's top wind and percussion players. He assembled a group of talented musicians, and the Vanderbilt University Wind Symphony was born. Over the years, the ensemble has had many talented members, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members and community musicians. The ensemble is made up of woodwind, brass, and percussion players, and performs a wide variety of classical music, including works by composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Stravinsky. One of the highlights of the Vanderbilt University Wind Symphony's history was their performance at the 1996 College Band Directors National Association Conference in Boulder, Colorado. The ensemble was one of only six wind ensembles selected to perform at the conference, and they received rave reviews for their performance. The ensemble also performed at the 2001 and 2011 CBDNA Southern Division Conferences, and was invited to perform at the 2015 CBDNA National Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. In addition to their performances at national conferences, the Vanderbilt University Wind Symphony has also performed at many other prestigious venues, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Tennessee Performing Arts Center in Nashville. They have also collaborated with many renowned composers and conductors, including John Corigliano, Michael Daugherty, and Frank Ticheli. The ensemble has also received many awards and accolades over the years. In 1998, they were named the Tennessee Music Educators Association College/University Honor Band, and in 2001, they were named the National Band Association Southern Division College/University Honor Band. They have also received numerous awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP) for their performances of contemporary music. The Vanderbilt University Wind Symphony is currently under the direction of Dr. Jeremy Wilson, who took over as director of bands at Vanderbilt in 2015. Dr. Wilson is a highly respected conductor and educator, and has continued the tradition of excellence established by Dr. Verrier. Under his leadership, the ensemble has continued to perform at a high level, and has maintained its reputation as one of the top wind ensembles in the country.
