Moira Smiley is a renowned American musician, composer, and singer who has made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. Born in Vermont, USA, in 1976, Smiley grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. Her father was a folk musician, and her mother was a classical pianist, which helped shape her musical interests. Smiley began her musical journey by learning the piano and violin at a young age. She later went on to study voice and composition at Indiana University, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree. During her time at Indiana University, Smiley was a member of the university's renowned vocal ensemble, the Singing Hoosiers, which helped her develop her vocal skills and stage presence. After completing her studies, Smiley moved to Los Angeles, where she began her career as a professional musician. She quickly established herself as a versatile performer, working with a variety of musical groups and artists. She also began composing her own music, drawing inspiration from her diverse musical background. One of Smiley's most significant achievements was her work with the vocal ensemble, VOCO. The group, which she co-founded in 2006, is known for its unique blend of traditional folk music and contemporary classical music. VOCO has performed at major music festivals and venues around the world, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Kennedy Center, and the Lincoln Center. In addition to her work with VOCO, Smiley has collaborated with a variety of other artists and groups, including the Kronos Quartet, Paul Hillier's Theatre of Voices, and the Tuvan throat-singing group, Huun-Huur-Tu. She has also composed music for film and television, including the soundtrack for the documentary film, "The Gnomist." Smiley's music has received critical acclaim and has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 2018, she was awarded a prestigious United States Artists Fellowship, which recognizes outstanding artists across a variety of disciplines. She has also received grants and awards from the American Composers Forum, the American Music Center, and the ASCAP Foundation. Throughout her career, Smiley has remained committed to exploring the boundaries of classical music and pushing the limits of what is possible with the human voice. Her unique blend of traditional and contemporary music has earned her a dedicated following and cemented her place as one of the most innovative and exciting musicians working today.
