Johann Steuerlein was a German composer and musician who lived during the Renaissance period. He was born in 1546 in the town of Schmalkalden, which was then part of the Holy Roman Empire. Steuerlein was the son of a Lutheran pastor, and he grew up in a religious household that valued music and education. As a young man, Steuerlein showed a talent for music and began studying with local musicians. He also attended the University of Wittenberg, where he studied theology and music. After completing his studies, Steuerlein became a cantor and organist at the St. Georgenkirche in Eisenach, where he worked for several years. During his time in Eisenach, Steuerlein composed a number of works for the church, including hymns, motets, and chorales. His music was well-received by the congregation, and he became known as a skilled composer and musician. In 1575, Steuerlein moved to Nuremberg, where he became the cantor and organist at the St. Sebaldus Church. He remained in this position for the rest of his life, and he continued to compose music for the church and other local institutions. One of Steuerlein's most famous works is his collection of chorale settings, which he published in 1588. This collection, titled "Geistliche Lieder und Psalmen," contains 50 settings of hymns and psalms, many of which are still performed today. Steuerlein's chorale settings are known for their simple, yet elegant melodies and harmonies, and they are considered to be some of the finest examples of Renaissance choral music. In addition to his choral music, Steuerlein also composed instrumental music, including pieces for the lute and keyboard. His keyboard music is particularly notable for its use of counterpoint and its intricate harmonies. Despite his success as a composer and musician, Steuerlein remained a humble and devout Christian throughout his life. He saw his music as a way to glorify God and to inspire others to worship and praise Him. Johann Steuerlein died in Nuremberg in 1613, at the age of 67. His music continues to be performed and studied today, and he is remembered as one of the most important composers of the Renaissance period.
