Pierre Kartner, also known as Vader Abraham, is a Dutch composer, singer, and songwriter who has made a significant contribution to the world of music. He was born on April 11, 1935, in Elst, Netherlands, and grew up in a musical family. His father was a conductor, and his mother was a singer, which inspired him to pursue a career in music. Kartner started playing the accordion at a young age and began composing music when he was just 13 years old. He studied music at the conservatory in Arnhem and later moved to Amsterdam to pursue his career in music. In the early 1960s, he started working as a songwriter for various Dutch artists and bands. In 1969, Kartner released his first single, "Benjamin," which became a hit in the Netherlands. However, it was his next single, "Het Smurfenlied" (The Smurf Song), that made him a household name. The song was written for a Dutch television show based on the popular Belgian comic book series, The Smurfs. The song became a massive hit in the Netherlands and Belgium and was later translated into many languages, including English, French, and German. Kartner continued to write music for The Smurfs and released several albums featuring songs about the beloved blue creatures. He also wrote music for other children's television shows, including "Pipo de Clown" and "Bassie en Adriaan." In addition to his work in children's music, Kartner also composed classical music. He wrote several symphonies, including "Symphony No. 1 in C Major" and "Symphony No. 2 in D Major." He also wrote several operas, including "De Kleine Kapitein" (The Little Captain) and "De Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe" (The Ship's Boys of Bontekoe). Kartner's classical music compositions were well-received by critics and audiences alike. His music was known for its melodic and accessible style, which made it popular with both classical music enthusiasts and casual listeners. Despite his success in classical music, Kartner remained best known for his work in children's music. He continued to write music for The Smurfs and other children's shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1981, he released a solo album, "Vader Abraham," which featured the hit single "Het Kleine Café Aan De Haven" (The Little Cafe by the Harbor). The song became a massive hit in the Netherlands and Belgium and remains one of Kartner's most popular songs. In the 1990s, Kartner continued to write music for children's shows and released several albums featuring songs about The Smurfs. He also wrote music for the Dutch national football team, including the popular song "Wij Houden Van Oranje" (We Love Orange). In recent years, Kartner has continued to perform and record music. He has released several albums featuring new songs and re-recordings of his classic hits. He has also performed live concerts throughout the Netherlands and Belgium. Kartner's contribution to the world of music has been significant. His catchy melodies and accessible style have made his music popular with audiences of all ages. His work in children's music has brought joy to generations of Dutch and Belgian children, while his classical music compositions have earned him critical acclaim. In recognition of his contribution to music, Kartner has received several awards and honors. In 2008, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, a prestigious Dutch honor, for his contribution to Dutch music. He has also been inducted into the Dutch Pop Hall of Fame and the Belgian Radio 2 Hall of Fame.
