He was born on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to John L. Nelson and Mattie Della Shaw. His father was a pianist and songwriter, and his mother was a jazz singer. Prince grew up in a musical family and was exposed to various genres of music from an early age. Prince started playing the piano at the age of seven and later learned to play the guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards. He formed his first band, Grand Central, when he was in junior high school. In 1976, he formed a new band called 94 East, which released an album that featured Prince's guitar work and songwriting. Prince's breakthrough came in 1978 when he signed a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records.
