Born on August 13, 1944, in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Germany, Färber showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later went on to study music at the Stuttgart Conservatory, where he specialized in conducting. Färber's career as a conductor began in the early 1970s when he was appointed as the principal conductor of the Württemberg Chamber Orchestra.
