He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a brass band conductor and his mother a pianist. Golland began playing the cornet at a young age and quickly showed a talent for music. He went on to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music, where he received a degree in composition. After completing his studies, Golland began working as a freelance composer and conductor. He quickly gained a reputation for his skill and was soon in demand by orchestras and ensembles throughout the UK. In addition to his work as a composer and conductor, Golland was also a respected music educator. He taught at several universities and music schools, including the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Salford. Throughout his career, Golland composed a wide range of music, including orchestral works, chamber music, and music for brass bands. He was particularly known for his brass band compositions, which are still performed and recorded today. Some of his most famous works for brass band include "The Land of the Long White Cloud," "Spectrum," and "Concerto Grosso." In addition to his work for brass band, Golland also composed several works for orchestra. One of his most famous orchestral works is "The Promised Land," which was commissioned by the BBC and premiered at the 1986 Proms. The piece is a powerful and emotional work that reflects Golland's deep love of nature and the English countryside. Golland's chamber music is also highly regarded, with works for a variety of ensembles, including string quartet, brass quintet, and wind quintet. One of his most famous chamber works is "Divertimento for Brass Quintet," which is a lively and playful piece that showcases Golland's skill as a composer. Throughout his career, Golland received numerous awards and honors for his work. He was a Fellow of the Royal Northern College of Music and was awarded the prestigious Iles Medal by the Worshipful Company of Musicians. He was also a member of the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors. Sadly, Golland's life was cut short when he died suddenly in 1993 at the age of 47. However, his legacy lives on through his music, which continues to be performed and recorded by musicians around the world. Golland's music is known for its emotional depth, technical skill, and beautiful melodies, and it remains a beloved part of the classical music repertoire.More....
