Jan Baptist Verrijt was a Dutch composer of the Baroque era, born in the city of Antwerp in 1640. He was the son of a musician, and it is likely that he received his early musical training from his father. Verrijt's talent for music was evident from a young age, and he quickly became known as a skilled performer and composer. Verrijt's early career was spent in Antwerp, where he worked as a musician and composer for various churches and other institutions. In 1665, he moved to Amsterdam, where he became the organist at the Oude Kerk, one of the city's most important churches. He remained in this position for the rest of his life, and it was during this time that he composed many of his most famous works. Verrijt's music is characterized by its rich harmonies, intricate counterpoint, and expressive melodies. He was particularly skilled at writing vocal music, and many of his works are settings of religious texts. His music is also notable for its use of chromaticism and dissonance, which were relatively new techniques at the time. One of Verrijt's most famous works is his setting of the Stabat Mater, a hymn that describes the suffering of Mary as she watches her son Jesus die on the cross. Another notable work is his setting of the Magnificat, a hymn of praise that is traditionally sung at vespers.
