Eugene Rousseau is a renowned classical saxophonist who has made significant contributions to the world of music. Born on August 23, 1932, in Blue Island, Illinois, Rousseau grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. Rousseau started playing the piano at the age of six and later switched to the saxophone at the age of twelve. Rousseau's early musical education was under the tutelage of his father, who was a violinist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He later studied at the Paris Conservatory with Marcel Mule, who was considered the father of the French saxophone school. Rousseau's training under Mule was instrumental in shaping his musical style and technique. In 1964, Rousseau joined the faculty of Indiana University's School of Music, where he taught for over 20 years. During his tenure at Indiana University, Rousseau established himself as a leading saxophonist and educator. He also founded the World Saxophone Congress, which has become one of the most significant events in the saxophone world. Rousseau's career as a performer has been marked by numerous highlights. In 1963, he won the prestigious International Saxophone Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, which helped to establish his reputation as a world-class saxophonist. He has also performed with some of the world's leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. One of Rousseau's most significant contributions to the world of music has been his work in expanding the saxophone repertoire. He has commissioned and premiered numerous works for the saxophone, including compositions by Ida Gotkovsky, Jacques Ibert, and Robert Muczynski. Rousseau's efforts have helped to establish the saxophone as a legitimate instrument in the classical music world. Rousseau has also been recognized for his contributions to music education. In 2003, he was awarded the National Association of Schools of Music Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in promoting the saxophone as a serious instrument in the classical music world. He has also been awarded honorary doctorates from several universities, including the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina. Throughout his career, Rousseau has remained committed to promoting the saxophone as a legitimate instrument in the classical music world. His contributions to the saxophone repertoire and his work in music education have helped to establish the saxophone as a respected instrument in the classical music world. Rousseau's legacy as a performer, educator, and advocate for the saxophone will continue to inspire future generations of musicians.
