Annie Birgit Garde was a Danish classical music artist who was born on September 17, 1922, in Copenhagen, Denmark. She was the daughter of a Danish father and a Swedish mother. Her father was a musician, and he encouraged her to pursue a career in music from a young age. Garde began her musical training at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where she studied piano and singing. She later continued her studies in Vienna, Austria, where she studied with the renowned vocal coach, Erik Werba. Garde made her professional debut in 1946, when she performed the role of Rosalinde in Johann Strauss II's operetta, Die Fledermaus, at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. Her performance was well-received, and it marked the beginning of a long and successful career in music. Over the course of her career, Garde performed in a wide range of operas, operettas, and musicals. She was particularly known for her performances in the works of Mozart, Strauss, and Wagner. Some of her most notable roles included Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni, the title role in Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier, and Elsa in Wagner's Lohengrin. Garde was also a prolific concert singer, and she performed in many concerts and recitals throughout her career. She was known for her beautiful voice, which had a rich and warm tone. One of Garde's most memorable performances took place in 1960, when she performed the role of the Countess in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at the Royal Opera House in London. Her performance was widely praised by critics, who described her as "a singer of great beauty and intelligence." Garde continued to perform well into her later years, and she remained an active and beloved figure in the Danish music scene until her death in 1999.
