He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Cumming showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Cumming's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied under renowned pianist and composer, Sir Edward Elgar. Cumming's early compositions were heavily influenced by Elgar's style, and he quickly gained recognition for his talent. In 1943, Cumming was drafted into the British Army and served in World War II. During his time in the army, he continued to compose music and even wrote a symphony that was performed by the army band. After the war, Cumming returned to London and continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Music. Cumming's early works were heavily influenced by the Romantic era, and he was often compared to composers such as Chopin and Liszt. However, as he matured as a composer, he began to develop his own unique style. His music became more complex and experimental, incorporating elements of atonality and serialism. One of Cumming's most famous works is his Piano Sonata No. 1, which he composed in 1950. The piece is known for its complex harmonies and intricate rhythms, and it has been performed by some of the world's most renowned pianists. Another notable work is his Symphony No. 2, which he composed in 1960. The symphony is a powerful and emotional work that showcases Cumming's mastery of orchestration. Throughout his career, Cumming received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1972, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to music. He was also a fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Philharmonic Society. Cumming continued to compose music well into his later years, and his works remain popular among classical music enthusiasts today.
