The orchestra was founded in 1963 by the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music, which is one of the leading music schools in Japan. The orchestra has since become one of the most respected wind ensembles in the world, known for its exceptional musicianship and innovative programming. The Senzoku Gakuen Symphonic Wind Orchestra is made up of approximately 80 musicians, all of whom are students or alumni of the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music. The ensemble is led by conductor and music director, Professor Kazuhiko Komatsu, who has been with the orchestra since 1983. Professor Komatsu is a highly respected conductor and educator, and has led the orchestra to numerous accolades and awards over the years. One of the highlights of the Senzoku Gakuen Symphonic Wind Orchestra's history was its performance at the 1991 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, which is one of the largest and most prestigious wind band conferences in the world. In 1997, the orchestra premiered a new work by American composer David Maslanka, which was commissioned specifically for the ensemble.
