Role:ComposerBirth:1789Death:1855Period:RomanticGenre:ChamberVocalRamon Carnicer was a Spanish composer and conductor who lived from 1789 to 1855. He was born in Tàrrega, a small town in Catalonia, Spain. His father was a musician and taught him to play the violin and piano from a young age. Carnicer showed a great talent for music and began composing his own pieces when he was just a teenager. In 1808, when Carnicer was 19 years old, Napoleon's army invaded Spain. Carnicer joined the Spanish army and fought against the French. After the war, he moved to Barcelona and began working as a music teacher and conductor. He also continued to compose music, and his works began to gain recognition in the music world. One of Carnicer's most famous works is his opera "El Barcelona o els Vells Catalans" (Barcelona or the Old Catalans), which premiered in 1827. The opera tells the story of a group of elderly Catalans who defend their city against an invading army. The opera was a huge success and helped to establish Carnicer as one of the leading composers of his time. Carnicer also composed a number of other operas, including "La Púrpura de la Rosa" (The Purple of the Rose), which is considered to be the first Spanish opera. The opera premiered in 1701, but Carnicer revised and updated it in 1830. The revised version was also a great success and helped to establish Carnicer as a pioneer of Spanish opera. In addition to his work as a composer, Carnicer was also a talented conductor. He conducted the first performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in Spain in 1824. He also conducted the premiere of Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" in Barcelona in 1818. Carnicer was a strong supporter of Catalan culture and language, and he incorporated Catalan folk music into many of his compositions. He also founded the Catalan Academy of Music in 1837, which helped to promote Catalan music and culture. Carnicer's music was influenced by the classical style of Mozart and Haydn, as well as the Italian opera tradition. His compositions are known for their melodic beauty and dramatic intensity. He was also known for his skillful use of orchestration, and his works often feature complex and colorful instrumentation. Carnicer died in Barcelona in 1855, but his legacy lives on through his music. His works continue to be performed and recorded today, and he is remembered as one of the most important composers of Spanish opera.More....
