Role:PerformerJames Cleverton is a British bass-baritone who has established himself as a prominent figure in the world of classical music. Born in 1979 in the town of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, Cleverton showed an early interest in music and began singing in choirs at a young age. He went on to study music at the University of York, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. After completing his studies, Cleverton began his professional career as a member of the chorus at the English National Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and commanding stage presence, and was soon offered solo roles in productions such as Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" and Verdi's "Aida". In 2008, he made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, singing the role of the High Priest in Mozart's "Idomeneo". Cleverton's career continued to flourish in the following years, as he performed with some of the world's leading opera companies and orchestras. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2011, singing the role of the First Nazarene in Richard Strauss's "Salome". He has also appeared at the Paris Opera, the Berlin State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, and the Glyndebourne Festival, among others. One of Cleverton's most notable performances came in 2013, when he sang the role of Wotan in Wagner's "Das Rheingold" at the Longborough Festival Opera. The production was widely praised for its innovative staging and Cleverton's powerful portrayal of the god of the underworld. He went on to reprise the role in subsequent productions of the "Ring" cycle at Longborough and other venues. Cleverton has also made a name for himself as a concert performer, appearing with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He has sung in works by composers ranging from Bach and Handel to Mahler and Britten, and has collaborated with conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Daniel Harding. In addition to his performances on stage and in concert, Cleverton has also been recognized for his recordings. He has also been a finalist in the Kathleen Ferrier Awards and the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition.
