The ensemble was established by the French radio broadcaster Radiodiffusion Française, which later became Radio France. The purpose of the ensemble was to perform operas and other works of classical music for radio broadcasts. The founding members of Orchestre Radio-Lyrique included some of the most talented musicians in France at the time. The ensemble was led by conductor Eugène Bigot, who had previously conducted the Paris Opera. Other notable members of the ensemble included violinist Jacques Thibaud, cellist Maurice Gendron, and pianist Robert Casadesus. Orchestre Radio-Lyrique quickly gained a reputation for excellence in the world of classical music. The ensemble performed a wide range of works, including operas, symphonies, and chamber music. Some of the most notable performances by Orchestre Radio-Lyrique include their 1946 performance of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, which was broadcast live on French radio and later released on record. In addition to their performances for radio broadcasts, Orchestre Radio-Lyrique also performed in concert halls throughout France and Europe. The ensemble toured extensively, performing in cities such as London, Brussels, and Geneva. Their performances were highly acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. Orchestre Radio-Lyrique also received numerous awards and honors throughout their career. In 1950, the ensemble was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. They also received the Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros for their recording of Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande. Despite their success, Orchestre Radio-Lyrique faced financial difficulties in the 1950s. The ensemble was eventually disbanded in 1954, and many of its members went on to pursue successful solo careers. Today, Orchestre Radio-Lyrique is remembered as one of the most important classical music ensembles of the 20th century.
