Leslie studied music at the Juilliard School in New York City, where he received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1938. In 1941, Leslie joined the United States Army and served as a musician in the Army Band. He was stationed in Europe during World War II and performed for troops in England, France, and Germany. He wrote music for films, television shows, and commercials, as well as classical music pieces. One of his most famous works is the ballet "The Nutcracker Suite," which he arranged for the Boston Pops Orchestra in 1950. The suite became a popular holiday classic and is still performed by orchestras around the world today. Leslie also wrote several other classical music pieces, including symphonies, concertos, and chamber music.
