Greg Caffrey is a contemporary classical music composer from Northern Ireland. He was born in Belfast in 1963 and grew up in a musical family. His father was a jazz pianist and his mother was a singer, so music was always a part of his life. Caffrey started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the guitar and bass. Caffrey studied music at Queen's University Belfast, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1985. He then went on to study composition at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, where he earned a Master of Music degree in 1987. While at the Royal Northern College of Music, Caffrey studied with some of the leading composers of the time, including Anthony Gilbert and John Casken. After completing his studies, Caffrey returned to Northern Ireland and began working as a freelance composer. He quickly established himself as one of the leading composers in the country, and his works were performed by some of the top orchestras and ensembles in the region. One of Caffrey's early works, "The Persistence of Memory," was commissioned by the Ulster Orchestra and premiered in 1991. The piece was well-received and helped establish Caffrey as a composer to watch. He went on to receive numerous commissions from other orchestras and ensembles, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, and the Irish Chamber Orchestra. Caffrey's music is known for its complexity and use of unconventional techniques.
