He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a violinist. From a young age, Gendre was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. Gendre's talent for music was evident from an early age, and he began studying at the Conservatoire de Paris at the age of seven. He studied under some of the most renowned piano teachers in France, including Yvonne Lefébure and Pierre Sancan. Gendre's dedication to his craft was evident, and he quickly became one of the most promising young pianists in France. In 1967, Gendre won first prize at the prestigious Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud International Piano Competition. This was a significant achievement for the young pianist, and it helped to launch his career. Gendre went on to win several other awards and competitions throughout his career, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1970. Gendre's career as a concert pianist took him all over the world. He performed in some of the most prestigious concert halls, including Carnegie Hall in New York, the Royal Albert Hall in London, and the Salle Pleyel in Paris.
