PolandBirth:February 26, 1834Death:November 1, 1895Period:RomanticGenre:ChamberAleksander Zarzycki was a Polish composer and pianist who lived from 1834 to 1895. He was born in the town of Zhytomyr, which was then part of the Russian Empire. His father was a Polish nobleman and his mother was of French descent. Zarzycki showed an early talent for music and began studying piano at a young age. He later studied composition with Antoni Kątski and Juliusz Zarębski. Zarzycki's early compositions were influenced by the Romantic style of Chopin and Liszt. He wrote several works for piano, including a set of mazurkas and a piano concerto. In 1858, he moved to Paris to further his studies and to immerse himself in the musical culture of the city. While in Paris, he studied with Charles-Valentin Alkan and became friends with other Polish musicians, including Frédéric Chopin's pupil Karol Mikuli. Zarzycki's time in Paris was productive, and he composed several works during this period. One of his most famous works is his Mazurka in G major, Op. 26, No. 2, which is still a popular piece in the piano repertoire. He also wrote a number of chamber works, including a piano trio and a string quartet. In 1860, Zarzycki returned to Poland and settled in Warsaw. He became a professor at the Warsaw Conservatory and continued to compose. He wrote several operas, including his most famous work, the opera "Janek" (also known as "The Gipsy"), which premiered in 1882. "Janek" was a critical and popular success, and it remains one of the most frequently performed Polish operas. Zarzycki also wrote a number of orchestral works, including two symphonies and several overtures. His Symphony No. 2 in F major, Op. 15, is considered one of his most important works. It was premiered in Warsaw in 1875 and was well-received by audiences and critics alike. In addition to his work as a composer, Zarzycki was also a respected pianist and conductor. He performed throughout Europe and was known for his virtuosic playing. He also conducted several premieres of his own works, including the premiere of "Janek." Zarzycki's music is characterized by its Romantic style and its use of Polish folk melodies. He was a master of melody and harmony, and his works are known for their lyricism and emotional depth. His music is still performed today and is considered an important part of the Polish classical music tradition. Zarzycki died in 1895 in Warsaw, at the age of 61. He left behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be appreciated by audiences around the world.More....
