Fang Man's father was a businessman, and his mother was a housewife. Fang Man's parents were not musicians, but they encouraged their children to pursue their interests and passions. Fang Man showed an early interest in music and began studying the piano at the age of six. He was a talented pianist and won several awards in local competitions. Fang Man's parents recognized his talent and enrolled him in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music when he was 12 years old. At the conservatory, Fang Man studied composition with the renowned composer Ding Shande. Ding Shande was a major influence on Fang Man's musical style and encouraged him to explore traditional Chinese music in his compositions. Fang Man also studied piano and conducting at the conservatory. After graduating from the conservatory, Fang Man worked as a composer and conductor for the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He composed several works for the orchestra, including his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1958. The symphony was well-received and established Fang Man as a rising star in the Chinese classical music scene. In the 1960s, Fang Man became interested in electronic music and began experimenting with synthesizers and other electronic instruments. He composed several works for electronic instruments, including his Electronic Symphony, which was premiered in 1969. The work was groundbreaking for its use of electronic instruments in classical music and established Fang Man as a pioneer in the field of electronic music. Fang Man's music was heavily influenced by traditional Chinese music, and he often incorporated Chinese folk melodies and instruments into his compositions. He also drew inspiration from Western classical music, particularly the works of Beethoven and Mahler. Fang Man's most famous work is his Symphony No. 2, also known as the Yellow River Symphony. The symphony was composed in 1969 and is based on the Yellow River Cantata, a patriotic work that celebrates the Chinese people's struggle against imperialism and feudalism. Fang Man's symphony incorporates themes from the Yellow River Cantata and features traditional Chinese instruments, including the erhu and pipa. The Yellow River Symphony was premiered in 1970 and was an immediate success. It became one of the most popular works in the Chinese classical music repertoire and was performed frequently in China and abroad. The symphony's popularity helped to establish Fang Man as one of the most important composers in China. Fang Man continued to compose throughout his life and was recognized with numerous awards and honors for his contributions to Chinese classical music.
