Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc is a French choir of boys and girls, founded in 1986 by Nicolas Porte. The choir is based in Lyon, France, and is composed of around 80 children aged between 8 and 15 years old. The choir has gained international recognition for its performances of classical music, and has become one of the most renowned children's choirs in the world. The birth of Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc can be traced back to the early 1980s, when Nicolas Porte, a music teacher at the Saint-Marc school in Lyon, began to teach music to a group of children. Porte was passionate about music and wanted to share his love of classical music with his students. He soon realized that the children had a natural talent for singing, and decided to form a choir. The choir began with just a few children, but quickly grew in size as more and more children wanted to join. Porte was a strict but caring teacher, and he demanded a high level of discipline and dedication from his students. He believed that music was a way to teach children important values such as teamwork, respect, and perseverance. The choir's first major performance was in 1987, when they sang at the inauguration of the new opera house in Lyon. The performance was a huge success, and the choir received a standing ovation from the audience. This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career for Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc. Over the years, the choir has performed at some of the most prestigious venues in the world, including the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Sistine Chapel in Rome, and the Carnegie Hall in New York. They have also performed with some of the most renowned orchestras and conductors, such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Sir Simon Rattle. One of the choir's most memorable performances was at the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005. The choir sang a beautiful rendition of Mozart's Requiem, which moved the entire world. The performance was broadcast live on television and watched by millions of people around the world. Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc has also won numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 1995, they won the Grand Prix du Disque for their recording of Gabriel Fauré's Requiem. In 2004, they were awarded the title of "Ambassadors of the City of Lyon" for their contribution to the cultural life of the city. In 2010, they were awarded the prestigious "Prix de l'Académie des Beaux-Arts" for their outstanding contribution to the world of classical music. Despite their success, Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc remains a humble and dedicated choir. They continue to rehearse for hours every day, and their performances are always characterized by their passion, precision, and emotion. The choir has become a symbol of excellence in the world of classical music, and their legacy will continue to inspire generations of young musicians for years to come.
