David Weiss is a renowned American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader. He was born on February 22, 1964, in New York City, New York, and grew up in Queens. Weiss was exposed to music at a young age, as his father was a jazz enthusiast and would often play records at home. He began playing the trumpet at the age of eight and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Weiss attended the High School of Music and Art in New York City, where he studied with jazz trumpeter and educator Donald Byrd. After graduating, he went on to attend the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with jazz trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Weiss also studied with jazz trumpeter and educator Bill Hardman. In 1985, Weiss joined the jazz ensemble of saxophonist and composer Freddie Hubbard. He toured with Hubbard for several years and recorded several albums with him, including "The Eternal Triangle" and "Life Flight." Weiss also played with other jazz legends such as Art Blakey, Frank Foster, and Charles Tolliver. In 1991, Weiss formed his own jazz ensemble, the David Weiss Sextet. The group released their debut album, "Breathing Room," in 1992. The album received critical acclaim and established Weiss as a bandleader and composer. The David Weiss Sextet went on to release several more albums, including "In the Pocket" and "The Mirror." Weiss has also collaborated with other jazz musicians and artists, including pianist Geri Allen, saxophonist Steve Wilson, and drummer Billy Hart. He has also worked as a sideman on numerous albums, including pianist Jason Moran's "Modernistic" and saxophonist Ravi Coltrane's "Mad 6." In addition to his work as a musician, Weiss is also an educator. He has taught at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City and has conducted workshops and masterclasses around the world. Weiss has received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 2000, he was awarded the Chamber Music America New Works Grant for his composition "The Mirror." In 2005, he was awarded the ASCAP/IAJE Commission in Honor of Quincy Jones for his composition "The Turning Gate." In 2010, he was awarded the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Best Trumpeter. Weiss continues to perform and record with his ensemble and other jazz musicians. His most recent album, "When Words Fail," was released in 2020 and features saxophonist and composer Miguel Zenón. Weiss's contributions to the world of jazz have made him a respected and influential figure in the genre.
