Flausino Rodrigues DoVale was a Brazilian classical music composer who was born on August 15, 1894, in the city of São Paulo. He was the son of a Portuguese immigrant and a Brazilian mother, and he grew up in a family that was deeply involved in music. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist, so it was only natural that Flausino would develop a love for music at a young age. Flausino began his musical education at the age of six, when he started taking piano lessons with his mother. He showed a natural talent for the instrument, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in public. In addition to the piano, Flausino also learned to play the violin and the cello, and he became proficient in both instruments. In 1912, Flausino enrolled in the São Paulo Conservatory of Music, where he studied composition with the renowned Brazilian composer Francisco Braga. He also studied piano with the famous pianist and composer José Levy, and he continued to develop his skills as a violinist and cellist. After completing his studies at the conservatory, Flausino began his career as a composer. His early works were heavily influenced by the European classical tradition, but he also incorporated elements of Brazilian folk music into his compositions. One of his most famous early works is the Suite Brasileira, which was composed in 1922 and is still performed today. In the 1930s, Flausino became involved in the Brazilian nationalist movement, which sought to promote Brazilian culture and identity through the arts. He began to incorporate more Brazilian themes and rhythms into his music, and he became known for his use of the choro, a popular Brazilian musical style that combines elements of European classical music with African and indigenous rhythms. One of Flausino's most famous works from this period is the Choro No. 1, which was composed in 1935. The piece is a virtuosic showcase for the piano, and it incorporates elements of Brazilian folk music, including the samba and the maxixe. The Choro No. 1 became one of Flausino's most popular works, and it is still performed by pianists around the world. In addition to his work as a composer, Flausino was also a respected music educator. He taught at the São Paulo Conservatory of Music for many years, and he also founded his own music school, the Escola de Música Flausino Rodrigues DoVale. Many of his students went on to become successful musicians and composers in their own right. Flausino continued to compose music throughout his life, and he remained active in the Brazilian music scene until his death in 1954. His music continues to be performed and recorded today, and he is remembered as one of the most important Brazilian composers of the 20th century.
