Pierre Vallet was a French harpsichordist and conductor who was born on December 31, 1939, in Paris, France. He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a well-known composer and conductor. Vallet began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and harpsichord with his father. He later went on to study at the Paris Conservatory, where he received a degree in harpsichord performance. Vallet's career as a musician began in the 1960s, when he started performing as a soloist and chamber musician. He quickly gained a reputation as one of the leading harpsichordists of his generation, and he was invited to perform at major music festivals throughout Europe and the United States. One of Vallet's most notable performances was his 1973 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations, which was widely praised by critics and became a best-selling album. He also recorded several other albums of Baroque music, including works by Handel, Rameau, and Couperin. In addition to his work as a performer, Vallet was also a respected conductor. He founded the Ensemble Baroque de Paris in 1978, which specialized in performing Baroque music on period instruments. The ensemble quickly gained a following, and they were invited to perform at major music festivals throughout Europe and the United States. Vallet's work with the Ensemble Baroque de Paris led to several notable collaborations with other musicians and ensembles. He worked with the English Chamber Orchestra, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, among others. Vallet's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1985, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Rameau's Pièces de Clavecin en Concerts. He was also awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government in 1990. Vallet continued to perform and record music throughout his career, and he remained an influential figure in the world of Baroque music until his death in 2009. His recordings and performances continue to be celebrated by music lovers and critics around the world.
