He was the son of a violinist and a pianist, and his parents were his first music teachers. Pigott-Smith showed an early interest in music and began playing the violin at the age of five. Pigott-Smith's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He attended the Yehudi Menuhin School, where he studied under the tutelage of some of the most renowned violinists of the time. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he honed his skills and developed his unique style. Pigott-Smith's career as a professional musician began in the early 1980s when he joined the London Symphony Orchestra. He quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the orchestra's most prominent members. He also performed with other orchestras, including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Chamber Orchestra. Throughout his career, Pigott-Smith was known for his virtuosity and his ability to bring out the emotional depth of the music he played. He was particularly renowned for his performances of the works of Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms. His performances were marked by their precision, clarity, and sensitivity.
