He was the son of a wealthy family and grew up in a privileged environment. His mother was a pianist, and his father was a businessman who had a passion for music. Chanler's parents encouraged his interest in music from an early age, and he began taking piano lessons when he was six years old. Chanler attended Harvard University, where he studied music with Walter Piston and Edward Burlingame Hill. He also studied composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. During his time in Paris, Chanler became interested in the music of Debussy and Ravel, and their influence can be heard in his compositions. Chanler's music is characterized by its lyricism, harmonic complexity, and use of unusual instrumental combinations. He was particularly interested in setting poetry to music and collaborated with many poets, including W.H. Auden, E.E. Cummings, and Marianne Moore. One of Chanler's most famous works is his song cycle "Eight Epitaphs," which sets poems by Cummings to music. The cycle was premiered in 1926 and was immediately recognized as a masterpiece. The songs are characterized by their spare, haunting melodies and unusual harmonies. Another notable work by Chanler is his "Three Songs of Walt Whitman," which sets poems from Whitman's "Leaves of Grass" to music. The songs are characterized by their lush harmonies and sweeping melodies. Chanler also wrote several instrumental works, including a piano sonata and a string quartet. His instrumental music is characterized by its virtuosity and technical complexity. Despite his talent and early success, Chanler struggled with mental illness throughout his life. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the 1930s and spent much of his later life in and out of mental institutions. He died on July 27, 1961, at the age of 58. Despite his relatively short life and struggles with mental illness, Theodore Chanler left behind a significant body of work that continues to be performed and admired today. His music is characterized by its lyricism, harmonic complexity, and use of unusual instrumental combinations, and his collaborations with poets such as Cummings and Whitman have resulted in some of the most beautiful and haunting songs in the classical repertoire.More....
