Mats Larsson was born on May 5, 1965, in Stockholm, Sweden. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a singer. From a young age, Larsson showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He also started composing his own music at a very young age, and by the time he was a teenager, he had already written several pieces for piano and orchestra. Larsson studied music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, where he received a degree in composition. During his time at the college, he studied under some of the most renowned composers in Sweden, including Anders Hillborg and Sven-David Sandström. He also had the opportunity to work with some of the best orchestras in the country, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. After completing his studies, Larsson began working as a freelance composer, writing music for a variety of different projects. He composed music for film, television, and theater, as well as for classical ensembles and orchestras. His music was known for its unique blend of traditional classical music and modern electronic sounds, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most innovative composers of his generation. One of Larsson's most notable works is his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 1995. The symphony is a complex and intricate work that showcases Larsson's mastery of orchestration and his ability to blend different musical styles. The piece was well-received by critics and audiences alike, and it helped establish Larsson as one of the leading composers of his generation. Another highlight of Larsson's career was his collaboration with the Swedish National Ballet. In 2001, he was commissioned to write the music for a new ballet called "The Snow Queen." The ballet was a huge success, and Larsson's music was praised for its ability to capture the magical and mystical atmosphere of the story. In addition to his work as a composer, Larsson was also a respected music educator. He taught composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and he was known for his ability to inspire and mentor young composers. Many of his students went on to have successful careers in music, and they credit Larsson with helping them develop their own unique voices as composers. Sadly, Mats Larsson passed away in 2013 at the age of 48. His death was a great loss to the music world, and he is remembered as one of the most talented and innovative composers of his generation. His music continues to be performed and celebrated around the world, and his legacy as a composer and educator lives on.
