Role:ComposerBirth:1968Period:ContemporaryGenre:ConcertoFrank Zabel was a German composer and pianist who was born on August 22, 1958, in Berlin, Germany. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a composer and his mother a pianist. From a young age, Zabel showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. Zabel received his formal music education at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin, where he studied composition with Ruth Zechlin and piano with Georg Sava. He graduated with honors in 1983 and went on to pursue a career as a composer and pianist. Zabel's early works were heavily influenced by the music of the Second Viennese School, particularly the works of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg. His compositions were characterized by their atonal and dissonant harmonies, complex rhythms, and intricate textures. Some of his early works include the String Quartet No. 1 (1984) and the Piano Sonata No. 1 (1985). In the late 1980s, Zabel's style began to shift towards a more tonal and accessible sound. He began incorporating elements of traditional tonality and melody into his compositions, while still retaining his unique harmonic language. This change in style can be heard in works such as the Symphony No. 1 (1988) and the Piano Concerto No. 1 (1990). Throughout his career, Zabel was a prolific composer, producing works in a variety of genres, including orchestral, chamber, vocal, and solo piano music. Some of his most notable works include the Symphony No. 2 (1995), the String Quartet No. 2 (1998), and the Piano Sonata No. 2 (2001). Zabel's music has been performed by some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Arditti Quartet. He was also a respected pianist, performing his own works as well as the works of other composers in concerts throughout Europe. In addition to his work as a composer and pianist, Zabel was also a dedicated teacher. He taught composition and piano at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin from 1986 until his death in 2014. Zabel's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was awarded the Berlin Art Prize in 1992 and the German Music Publishers' Association Prize in 2003. In 2010, he was awarded the Order of Merit of Berlin for his contributions to the city's cultural life. Frank Zabel's music is characterized by its unique harmonic language, intricate textures, and emotional depth. His works are a testament to his dedication to the art of composition and his unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of classical music.More....
