Nicholas Sackman is a British composer who was born in 1950 in London. He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a professional violinist and his mother a pianist. Sackman started playing the piano at a young age and later learned to play the violin and the viola. He attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Alan Bush and piano with Gordon Green. Sackman's early compositions were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the works of Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. However, he soon developed his own style, which combined elements of modernism with a more traditional approach to melody and harmony. His music is characterized by its rhythmic complexity, intricate textures, and use of extended techniques. One of Sackman's early works, "String Quartet No. 1," was premiered in 1973 by the Arditti Quartet. The piece is notable for its use of microtonal intervals and its exploration of the timbral possibilities of the string quartet. Sackman continued to write for the string quartet throughout his career, and his later works in this genre include "String Quartet No. 2" (1980) and "String Quartet No. 3" (1995). In the 1980s, Sackman began to incorporate electronic music into his compositions. He was particularly interested in the possibilities of live electronics, which allowed him to manipulate the sound of acoustic instruments in real time. One of his most famous works in this genre is "Concerto for Viola and Live Electronics" (1986), which was commissioned by the BBC and premiered by the violist Garth Knox. The piece features a solo viola part that is processed through a computer in real time, creating a complex and constantly evolving sound world. Sackman's music has been performed by many leading ensembles and soloists, including the London Sinfonietta, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Nash Ensemble, and the pianist Joanna MacGregor. He has also been commissioned by a number of prestigious organizations, including the BBC, the Arts Council of England, and the Royal Philharmonic Society. In addition to his work as a composer, Sackman has also been active as a teacher and musicologist. He has taught composition at the Royal Academy of Music and the University of Sussex, and has written extensively on the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. His publications include "The Music of Michael Tippett" (1999) and "The Music of Harrison Birtwistle" (2000). Overall, Nicholas Sackman is a highly respected composer who has made significant contributions to the field of contemporary classical music. His music is characterized by its technical sophistication, its exploration of new sound worlds, and its ability to combine modernist and traditional elements in a unique and compelling way.
