Pietro Scarpini was an Italian classical pianist and music educator who was born on August 6, 1911, in Rome, Italy. He was the son of a music teacher and began his musical education at a young age. Scarpini showed a natural talent for the piano and quickly became a prodigy. He studied at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, where he was taught by renowned pianist Alfredo Casella. Scarpini's talent was recognized early on, and he began performing in public at the age of 12. He made his debut as a soloist with the Rome Symphony Orchestra when he was just 16 years old. Scarpini's performances were well-received, and he quickly gained a reputation as one of the most promising young pianists in Italy. In 1932, Scarpini won the prestigious International Piano Competition in Vienna, Austria. This victory launched his international career, and he began performing in major concert halls throughout Europe. Scarpini's performances were characterized by his technical brilliance and his ability to convey the emotional depth of the music he played. During World War II, Scarpini served in the Italian army and was captured by the Germans. He spent several years in a prisoner-of-war camp, where he continued to practice the piano and give concerts for his fellow prisoners. After the war, Scarpini resumed his career as a concert pianist and became a professor at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Scarpini's repertoire was wide-ranging, and he was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven. He was also a champion of contemporary music and premiered works by many of the leading composers of his time, including Luigi Dallapiccola and Luciano Berio. One of Scarpini's most notable performances was his 1955 recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. This recording is considered one of the definitive interpretations of the work and has been praised for its clarity, precision, and emotional depth. Scarpini's recording of the Goldberg Variations remains a landmark in the history of classical music. Scarpini was also a dedicated music educator and taught at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia for many years.
