Role:EnsembleThe University of New Mexico Wind Symphony is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been entertaining audiences for over 60 years. The ensemble was founded in 1950 by Dr. Roger Cichy, who served as its first conductor. Since then, the Wind Symphony has become one of the most respected and accomplished wind ensembles in the United States. The Wind Symphony is made up of approximately 50 talented musicians, all of whom are students at the University of New Mexico. The ensemble is open to both undergraduate and graduate students, and membership is determined through a rigorous audition process. The Wind Symphony is led by Dr. Eric Rombach-Kendall, who has been the ensemble's conductor since 1993. Over the years, the Wind Symphony has performed at numerous prestigious venues and events. One of the ensemble's most notable performances was at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. The Wind Symphony was one of only two American ensembles invited to perform at the games, and their performance was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. The Wind Symphony has also performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago, which is one of the largest and most prestigious music conferences in the world. In addition, the ensemble has toured extensively throughout the United States, performing in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The Wind Symphony has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2015, the ensemble was selected to perform at the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) conference, which is considered one of the highest honors for a wind ensemble. The Wind Symphony has also been invited to perform at the New Mexico Music Educators Association (NMMEA) conference on multiple occasions. In addition to their performances, the Wind Symphony is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly performs for local schools and community groups, and they have also collaborated with other arts organizations in the Albuquerque area.
