He was a renowned organist, harpsichordist, and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. De Klerk's musical journey began at a young age when he started playing the piano. He later switched to the organ and studied under the tutelage of Anthon van der Horst, a prominent Dutch organist. De Klerk's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional skills. In 1939, de Klerk was appointed as the organist of the St. Bavo Church in Haarlem, Netherlands. This was a significant milestone in his career, as the church was home to one of the most famous organs in the world, the MĂ¼ller organ. De Klerk's performances on the MĂ¼ller organ were highly acclaimed, and he became known as one of the best organists of his time. During World War II, de Klerk continued to perform despite the difficult circumstances. He played for the Dutch resistance movement and gave concerts to raise funds for the war effort. His music provided solace and comfort to many during this challenging time. After the war, de Klerk's career continued to flourish. He performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, earning critical acclaim for his performances. He was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of Bach's organ works are considered some of the best ever made. In addition to his work as an organist, de Klerk was also a talented harpsichordist and conductor. He founded the Haarlem Chamber Orchestra in 1955 and served as its conductor for many years. He also taught at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he trained many talented musicians. De Klerk's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. In 1967, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau, one of the highest honors in the Netherlands. He was also awarded the Prix d'Excellence by the Dutch government for his outstanding contributions to music. One of de Klerk's most significant achievements was his role in the restoration of the MĂ¼ller organ at the St. Bavo Church. The organ had fallen into disrepair, and de Klerk worked tirelessly to raise funds for its restoration. His efforts paid off, and the organ was restored to its former glory, allowing future generations to enjoy its beautiful sound. De Klerk continued to perform and teach until his death on February 22, 1998. He left behind a legacy of exceptional music and a deep love for the art form.
