Juan Morel Campos was a Puerto Rican composer and musician who is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the development of classical music in Puerto Rico. Born on May 16, 1857, in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Morel Campos was the son of a musician and grew up surrounded by music. He began playing the guitar at a young age and quickly showed a talent for music. Morel Campos received his formal musical education at the Conservatory of Music in Paris, where he studied under some of the most renowned composers of the time. He returned to Puerto Rico in 1887 and began composing music that blended European classical music with traditional Puerto Rican rhythms and melodies. One of Morel Campos' most famous works is his Danza Número 5, which is considered one of the most important pieces of Puerto Rican classical music. The piece is a lively dance that incorporates elements of Puerto Rican folk music, such as the cuatro (a small guitar-like instrument) and the güiro (a percussion instrument made from a hollowed-out gourd). Morel Campos' music was also heavily influenced by the African rhythms that were brought to Puerto Rico by slaves. He incorporated these rhythms into his compositions, creating a unique sound that was both distinctly Puerto Rican and deeply rooted in the African diaspora. In addition to his work as a composer, Morel Campos was also a respected music teacher and conductor. He founded the Ponce Municipal Band in 1883 and served as its conductor for many years. He also taught music at the Ponce High School and the Ponce Conservatory of Music, where he trained many of Puerto Rico's most talented musicians. Morel Campos' contributions to Puerto Rican music were recognized during his lifetime, and he was awarded numerous honors and accolades. In 1920, he was awarded the Cross of Alfonso XII by the Spanish government in recognition of his contributions to music. He was also awarded the Order of Merit by the Puerto Rican government in 1923. Morel Campos continued to compose music until his death on May 12, 1896, in Ponce. His legacy lives on in the many musicians he trained and the countless Puerto Rican composers who have been inspired by his work. Today, Morel Campos is remembered as one of the most important figures in the development of classical music in Puerto Rico. His music continues to be performed and celebrated, and his influence can be heard in the work of many contemporary Puerto Rican composers.
