Freon Ensemble is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 2012 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for contemporary music. The ensemble is based in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and is known for its innovative and experimental approach to classical music. The founding members of Freon Ensemble were clarinetist Jelte Althuis, saxophonist Koen Kaptijn, and pianist Keiko Shichijo. They were later joined by percussionist Ryoko Imai and cellist Maya Fridman. All of the members of the ensemble are highly trained musicians who have studied at some of the most prestigious music schools in the world. The name "Freon" comes from the Dutch word for "coolant," which reflects the ensemble's desire to explore new and uncharted territory in classical music. The ensemble's repertoire includes works by contemporary composers such as Steve Reich, John Adams, and Louis Andriessen, as well as lesser-known composers from around the world. One of the highlights of Freon Ensemble's career was their performance at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek in 2014. In 2015, Freon Ensemble was awarded the Kersjesprijs, which is one of the most prestigious awards for classical music in the Netherlands. The prize money is intended to help the recipient further their career and develop their skills as a musician. Since winning the Kersjesprijs, Freon Ensemble has continued to perform at major festivals and venues around the world. One of the most memorable performances by Freon Ensemble was their collaboration with the Dutch National Ballet in 2017. The ensemble performed a new work by composer Kate Moore, which was choreographed by Juanjo Arqués. Freon Ensemble has also released several recordings, including their debut album "Freon" in 2015.
