Born in Iran in 1960, Afshar grew up in a family that valued education and the arts. Her father was a doctor and her mother was a painter, and they encouraged their daughter to pursue her interests in music from a young age. She studied with some of the best teachers in Iran, including Mansour Nariman and Sadegh Nojouki, and by the time she was a teenager, she was already performing in public. In 1977, Afshar moved to the United States to attend the Boston Conservatory of Music. She continued her studies with some of the most respected guitarists in the world, including Oscar Ghiglia and Julian Bream. She also earned a Master's degree in guitar performance from Florida State University. Throughout her career, Afshar has been recognized for her exceptional talent and dedication to the guitar. She has won numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious Orville H. Gibson Award for Best Female Classical Guitarist. She has also been named a Distinguished Artist by the Fulbright Program, and has been awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor for her contributions to the arts.
