He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a family that was passionate about music. From a young age, Zimmermann showed a keen interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became known for his exceptional musical abilities. Zimmermann's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began his formal training at the Vienna Music Academy, where he studied under some of the most renowned music teachers of the time. He quickly established himself as a talented pianist and began performing in public at the age of 12. In 1944, Zimmermann's family was forced to flee Vienna due to the war. They settled in Salzburg, where Zimmermann continued his musical studies.
