Born in 1982 in New York City, Kozar grew up in a family of musicians and was exposed to music from a young age. His father was a jazz pianist, and his mother was a classical pianist, so Kozar was surrounded by music at home. Kozar began playing the trumpet at the age of nine and quickly showed a natural talent for the instrument. He studied with several renowned trumpet teachers, including Mark Gould, Vincent Penzarella, and Raymond Mase. Kozar attended the Manhattan School of Music, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree in trumpet performance. He later earned a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. Throughout his career, Kozar has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles. Kozar has also performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the Albany Symphony Orchestra, the New York Youth Symphony, and the Yale Philharmonia. In addition to his work as a performer, Kozar is also an accomplished composer. He has written several works for trumpet, including "The Way Through," which was commissioned by the International Trumpet Guild. Kozar's compositions have been performed by ensembles such as the New York New Music Ensemble, the Talea Ensemble, and the Wet Ink Ensemble. Kozar is also a dedicated educator and has taught at several institutions, including the University of California, San Diego, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is currently an assistant professor of trumpet at the University of Alabama. Throughout his career, Kozar has received numerous awards and accolades for his work as a performer and composer. In 2011, he was awarded the Aaron Copland Fund for Music Recording Grant, which allowed him to record his debut album, "On the Endless Road." The album features Kozar's own compositions as well as works by other contemporary composers. Kozar has also been recognized for his work as a performer. In 2013, he was awarded the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant, which is given to outstanding instrumentalists who show great potential for a major career. The grant provided Kozar with financial support and professional development opportunities to help him further his career. In addition to his work as a performer, composer, and educator, Kozar is also a dedicated advocate for contemporary music. He has worked with several organizations to promote new music and has commissioned and premiered works by numerous composers.
