Role:ComposerKarin Haussmann was a German composer born on May 12, 1956, in Berlin. She grew up in a family of musicians, with her father being a pianist and her mother a violinist. From a young age, Haussmann showed a great interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of four. She later learned to play the violin and the cello. Haussmann's parents recognized her talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She attended the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where she studied composition with Friedrich Goldmann and piano with Georg Sava. After completing her studies, Haussmann began working as a freelance composer and pianist. Haussmann's early works were influenced by the avant-garde music of the 1960s and 1970s. She experimented with different techniques and styles, including serialism, minimalism, and electronic music. Her compositions were characterized by their complex rhythms, unconventional harmonies, and use of extended techniques. In the 1980s, Haussmann's music became more tonal and melodic. She began incorporating elements of traditional German music into her compositions, such as folk melodies and dance rhythms. Her works from this period include the String Quartet No. 1 (1982), the Piano Sonata No. 2 (1984), and the Symphony No. 1 (1986). Haussmann's music continued to evolve in the 1990s and 2000s. She began exploring new forms and genres, such as opera and choral music. Her works from this period include the opera Der Tod und das Mädchen (1992), the oratorio Die Schöpfung (2000), and the song cycle Winterreise (2005). Haussmann's music has been performed by many leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, and the Ensemble Modern. She has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize in 1998 and the Order of Merit of Berlin in 2006. Haussmann was known for her meticulous approach to composition and her dedication to her craft. She was a prolific composer, with a catalog of over 200 works. Her music was admired for its emotional depth, technical skill, and originality. Haussmann died on September 3, 2019, at the age of 63.
