William Knapp was a British composer and musician who lived during the 17th century. He was born in Wareham, Dorset, England, in 1698, and was the son of a local musician. Knapp showed an early interest in music and began his musical education at a young age. As a child, Knapp was taught to play the organ by his father, who was the organist at the local church. He quickly showed a talent for the instrument and began to compose his own music. At the age of 16, Knapp moved to London to study music at the Royal Academy of Music. During his time at the Royal Academy of Music, Knapp studied under some of the most prominent musicians of the time, including George Frideric Handel. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented composer and musician, and his works were performed at some of the most prestigious venues in London. Knapp's early works were heavily influenced by the Baroque style of music that was popular at the time. His compositions were characterized by their intricate melodies and complex harmonies, and he was known for his use of counterpoint and fugue. One of Knapp's most famous works is his setting of the hymn "O Worship the King." The hymn, which was written by Robert Grant in 1833, is still widely sung in churches today. Knapp's setting of the hymn is known for its soaring melodies and powerful harmonies, and it has become one of the most beloved hymns in the Christian tradition. In addition to his work as a composer, Knapp was also a skilled organist. He served as the organist at several churches in London, including St. Mary-le-Bow and St. Martin-in-the-Fields. His performances were highly regarded, and he was known for his virtuosic playing and improvisational skills. Knapp's later works showed a departure from the Baroque style that had characterized his earlier compositions. He began to incorporate elements of the Classical style into his music, and his works became more melodic and less complex. Despite his success as a composer and musician, Knapp struggled with financial difficulties throughout his life. He was forced to take on several teaching positions to make ends meet, and he often had to rely on the support of friends and patrons to continue his work. Knapp died in London in 1768 at the age of 70. Despite his financial struggles, he left behind a legacy of beautiful music that continues to be celebrated and performed today. His works are a testament to his talent and dedication to the art of music, and they continue to inspire and delight audiences around the world.
