Fraser Trainer was born on May 12, 1978, in Edinburgh, Scotland. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a professional pianist and his mother a violinist. From a young age, Trainer was exposed to classical music and began playing the piano at the age of four. He showed a natural talent for music and quickly progressed in his studies. Trainer attended the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, where he studied composition under the guidance of James MacMillan. During his time at the academy, Trainer composed several works that received critical acclaim, including his String Quartet No. 1 and his Piano Sonata No. 1.
