Samuli Kosminen is a Finnish percussionist and composer who has made a name for himself in the world of classical music. Born on May 18, 1974, in Helsinki, Finland, Kosminen grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a jazz musician, and his mother was a classical pianist. From a young age, Kosminen was exposed to a wide variety of music, and he quickly developed a passion for percussion. Kosminen began his formal music education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied percussion under the guidance of Markku Johansson. He later went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he earned a Master of Music degree in percussion performance. Throughout his career, Kosminen has collaborated with a number of prominent classical musicians and ensembles. He has performed with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tapiola Sinfonietta, among others. He has also worked with a number of contemporary composers, including Kaija Saariaho, Magnus Lindberg, and Esa-Pekka Salonen. One of Kosminen's most notable performances was his collaboration with the Kronos Quartet on the album "Uniko." The album, which was released in 2011, features compositions by Kosminen, Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen, and Finnish composer Samuli Kosminen. The album was well-received by critics and earned Kosminen and his collaborators a Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance. In addition to his work as a performer, Kosminen is also an accomplished composer. He has written music for a variety of ensembles, including percussion ensembles, string quartets, and symphony orchestras. His compositions are known for their innovative use of technology, incorporating elements of electronic music and sound design into traditional classical forms. Kosminen has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 2003, he was awarded the Finnish State Prize for Music, one of the country's highest honors for musicians. He has also been awarded the Teosto Prize, the Finnish equivalent of the Grammy Awards, on multiple occasions.
