Filarmonica Della Scala is a classical music ensemble based in Milan, Italy. The orchestra was founded in 1982 by Claudio Abbado, who was then the music director of La Scala, one of the world's most famous opera houses. The aim of the ensemble was to provide a platform for the musicians of La Scala to perform symphonic music, in addition to their regular opera duties. The founding members of Filarmonica Della Scala were drawn from the ranks of La Scala's orchestra, and included some of the finest musicians in Italy. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high standards of performance, and its ability to tackle a wide range of repertoire, from the classical era to contemporary music. Over the years, Filarmonica Della Scala has been led by a number of distinguished conductors, including Riccardo Muti, Daniel Barenboim, and Gustavo Dudamel. The orchestra has also collaborated with many of the world's leading soloists, including Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, and Yo-Yo Ma. One of the highlights of Filarmonica Della Scala's early years was its performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 2, conducted by Claudio Abbado in 1984. The concert was a huge success, and marked the beginning of a long association between the orchestra and the music of Mahler. In 1997, Filarmonica Della Scala recorded a complete cycle of Mahler's symphonies, under the baton of Riccardo Chailly. Another notable performance by Filarmonica Della Scala was its concert at the Vatican in 2004, which was attended by Pope John Paul II. The orchestra performed a program of sacred music, including works by Bach, Mozart, and Verdi. The concert was broadcast live on television, and was seen by millions of viewers around the world. In recent years, Filarmonica Della Scala has continued to build on its reputation as one of Italy's leading orchestras. In 2012, the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Premio Abbiati, which is presented annually by the Italian music critics' association to the country's best orchestra. The award recognized Filarmonica Della Scala's outstanding performances of works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Mahler, among others. One of the most memorable performances by Filarmonica Della Scala in recent years was its concert at the Salzburg Festival in 2015. The orchestra performed Mahler's Symphony No. 9, under the baton of Daniel Harding, to critical acclaim. The concert was hailed as a triumph for the ensemble, and cemented its reputation as one of the world's leading orchestras. Today, Filarmonica Della Scala continues to perform regularly at La Scala, as well as on tour around the world. The ensemble's current music director is Riccardo Chailly, who has been praised for his innovative programming and his commitment to bringing new audiences to classical music. With its rich history and its commitment to excellence, Filarmonica Della Scala is sure to remain one of Italy's most important cultural institutions for many years to come.
