Alexis Pia Gerlach is a renowned cellist and chamber musician who has captivated audiences around the world with her virtuosic performances and deep musicality. Born in New York City in 1971, Gerlach grew up in a family of musicians and began playing the cello at the age of four. Her mother, Adria Firestone, was a pianist and her father, Leslie Gerlach, was a violinist and conductor. Her grandfather, Karl Ulrich Schnabel, was a pianist and her great-grandfather, Artur Schnabel, was a legendary pianist and composer. Gerlach's early musical training was guided by her parents, who recognized her exceptional talent and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. She studied with renowned cellists such as Bernard Greenhouse, Joel Krosnick, and Timothy Eddy, and attended the Juilliard School, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. She later received a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music, where she studied with Aldo Parisot. Gerlach's career as a professional musician began in the early 1990s, when she joined the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra as its principal cellist.
