Mimi Stillman is a renowned classical flutist, chamber musician, and educator. She was born on December 22, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to a family of musicians. Her father, Richard Stillman, was a pianist and her mother, Barbara Day Turner, was a composer and conductor. Mimi grew up in a musical environment and started playing the flute at the age of five. Mimi received her early music education from her parents and later studied at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She was a student of Julius Baker, one of the most prominent flutists of the 20th century. Mimi also studied with Jeffrey Khaner, the principal flutist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Mimi's talent as a flutist was evident from a young age. She won her first competition at the age of eight and went on to win numerous awards and accolades throughout her career. In 1993, she won the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition, becoming the youngest winner in the competition's history. She also won the Philadelphia Orchestra's Albert M. Greenfield Student Competition in 1994. Mimi's career as a professional flutist began when she was just 12 years old. She made her debut as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, performing Mozart's Flute Concerto No. 1 in G major. This performance was a major milestone in her career and established her as a rising star in the classical music world. Over the years, Mimi has performed with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Chamber Symphony, the Boston Pops, and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. She has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, Christoph Eschenbach, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. In addition to her work as a soloist, Mimi is also an accomplished chamber musician. She is the founder and artistic director of the Dolce Suono Ensemble, a chamber music group based in Philadelphia. The ensemble has performed at major venues and festivals around the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Mimi is also a dedicated educator and has taught at several prestigious institutions, including the Curtis Institute of Music, the University of Pennsylvania, and Temple University. She is the author of several books on flute technique and pedagogy, including "Flute Secrets: Advice from the Pros" and "The Flute Scale Book." Throughout her career, Mimi has received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the classical music world. In 2003, she was named one of the "Top 25 Classical Musicians Under 40" by Musical America. She has also been awarded the National Flute Association's Lifetime Achievement Award and the Philadelphia Orchestra's C. Hartman Kuhn Award. Mimi's recordings have received critical acclaim and have been featured on radio stations around the world. Her album "Odyssey: 11 American Premieres for Flute and Piano" was named one of the "Top 10 Classical Albums of 2013" by The Philadelphia Inquirer. In addition to her work as a flutist, Mimi is also an advocate for social justice and environmental causes. She has performed benefit concerts for organizations such as the American Red Cross and the Sierra Club.
