Role:Composer ConductorGenre:ChamberKeyboardPeter Schindler was a German composer born on January 1, 1957, in Berlin. He grew up in a family of musicians, with his father being a pianist and his mother a singer. Schindler showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He later learned to play the violin and the cello. Schindler's musical education began at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he studied composition with Ruth Zechlin and piano with Georg Sava. He later continued his studies at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, where he studied with Wilhelm Killmayer. Schindler's early works were influenced by the music of Arnold Schoenberg and Alban Berg, but he later developed his own style, which was characterized by a combination of tonal and atonal elements. His music was also influenced by literature, and he often set texts by poets such as Rainer Maria Rilke and Paul Celan to music. Schindler's first major work was his Symphony No. 1, which he composed in 1983. The symphony was well-received and established Schindler as a promising young composer. He went on to compose several other orchestral works, including his Symphony No. 2, which was premiered by the Berlin Philharmonic in 1990. In addition to his orchestral works, Schindler also composed chamber music, including several string quartets and a piano trio. His chamber music was characterized by its intricate textures and complex harmonies. Schindler's vocal music was also an important part of his output. He composed several song cycles, including his Sechs Lieder nach Gedichten von Rainer Maria Rilke, which was premiered by the soprano Jessye Norman in 1991. He also composed several operas, including his Der Tod und das Mädchen, which was premiered in 1998. Schindler's music was recognized with several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1992, he was awarded the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, one of the most prestigious awards for classical music composers. He was also awarded the Berlin Art Prize in 1995. Despite his success as a composer, Schindler struggled with depression throughout his life. He died by suicide on December 31, 1999, at the age of 42. Schindler's music continues to be performed and recorded today. His Symphony No. 1 and Symphony No. 2 have been recorded by the Berlin Philharmonic, and his chamber music has been recorded by several ensembles, including the Arditti Quartet and the Trio Fontenay. His vocal music has been recorded by several singers, including Jessye Norman and Anne Sofie von Otter.More....
