Adele Addison was a renowned classical music artist who made a significant contribution to the world of music. She was born on July 24, 1925, in Springfield, Massachusetts, to parents who were both accomplished musicians. Her father, Leonard Addison, was a jazz trombonist, and her mother, Marie Addison, was a classical pianist. Adele grew up in a musical household and began singing at a young age. Adele's talent was evident from an early age, and she began studying music seriously in high school. She attended the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where she studied voice and music theory. After completing her studies, she moved to New York City to pursue a career in music. In 1948, Adele made her debut with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, performing Samuel Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915." Her performance was a huge success, and she quickly became a sought-after performer. She went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Adele's career was not limited to classical music. She also performed in musical theater and appeared in several Broadway productions, including "Porgy and Bess" and "Show Boat." She also appeared in several films, including "Carmen Jones" and "The Old Man and the Sea." One of Adele's most significant achievements was her performance at the inauguration of President John F. Kennedy in 1961. She sang the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," and her performance was widely praised. She went on to perform at several other presidential inaugurations, including those of Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson and Jimmy Carter. Adele was also a prolific recording artist. She recorded several albums of classical music, including works by Handel, Mozart, and Schubert. She also recorded several albums of spirituals and folk songs, including "Adele Addison Sings Spirituals" and "Adele Addison Sings Folk Songs." Throughout her career, Adele received many awards and honors. In 1956, she won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance - Vocal Soloist for her recording of "Knoxville: Summer of 1915." She was also awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1999, in recognition of her contributions to American culture. Adele Addison's career spanned several decades, and she remained active in music until her retirement in the 1990s. She passed away on December 31, 2020, at the age of 95.
