Harri Wessman was a Finnish composer and pianist who was born on August 22, 1959, in Helsinki, Finland. He was the youngest of three children born to a family of musicians. His father was a violinist and his mother was a pianist. Wessman's parents recognized his musical talent at an early age and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. Wessman began his musical education at the age of six, studying piano with his mother. He later studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he received a degree in piano performance. While at the academy, Wessman also studied composition with Einojuhani Rautavaara, one of Finland's most prominent composers. Wessman's early compositions were influenced by the music of his Finnish predecessors, such as Jean Sibelius and Einojuhani Rautavaara. His works were characterized by their use of traditional tonality and melodic lyricism. Wessman's music was also influenced by his interest in literature and poetry, and many of his works were inspired by literary themes. One of Wessman's early works, "Piano Sonata No. 1," was composed in 1982 and premiered at the Sibelius Academy. The piece was well-received and established Wessman as a promising young composer. In 1984, Wessman won the prestigious Jean Sibelius Composition Competition for his work "Symphony No. 1." The piece was performed by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and received critical acclaim. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Wessman continued to compose works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. His works were performed by many of Finland's leading orchestras, including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra and the Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra. Wessman's music was also performed internationally, with performances in Germany, France, and the United States. One of Wessman's most notable works is his "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra," which was composed in 1995. The piece was commissioned by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and premiered with Wessman as the soloist. The concerto is characterized by its virtuosic piano writing and its use of traditional tonality. The piece has since become a staple of the piano concerto repertoire and has been performed by many leading pianists. In addition to his work as a composer, Wessman was also an accomplished pianist. He performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician, and was known for his sensitive and expressive playing. Wessman was also a respected teacher, and taught composition and piano at the Sibelius Academy. Tragically, Wessman's life and career were cut short when he died of cancer on December 31, 2008, at the age of 49. His death was a great loss to the Finnish music community, and his music continues to be performed and celebrated today. In conclusion, Harri Wessman was a talented and accomplished composer and pianist who made significant contributions to the Finnish classical music scene. His works were characterized by their use of traditional tonality and melodic lyricism, and were often inspired by literary themes.
