Collegium Musicum Orchestra is a classical music ensemble that was founded in 1955 by conductor and harpsichordist Paul Sacher. The ensemble is based in Basel, Switzerland, and is known for its performances of Baroque and Classical music. Sacher founded the ensemble with the goal of performing music from the Baroque and Classical periods on period instruments. He assembled a group of musicians who shared his passion for historically informed performance, and the ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances. Over the years, Collegium Musicum Orchestra has had many members, but some of its most notable members include violinist Thomas Zehetmair, cellist Anner Bylsma, and flutist Aurèle Nicolet. These musicians have helped to shape the sound and style of the ensemble, and their contributions have been recognized with numerous awards and accolades. One of the highlights of Collegium Musicum Orchestra's early years was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 1956. This performance was a landmark event in the history of historically informed performance, and it helped to establish the ensemble as one of the leading Baroque ensembles in Europe. In the years that followed, Collegium Musicum Orchestra continued to perform and record music from the Baroque and Classical periods. The ensemble's recordings of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos and Mozart's Symphonies were particularly well-received, and helped to cement the ensemble's reputation as one of the finest period ensembles in the world. In addition to its recordings, Collegium Musicum Orchestra has also performed at many of the world's leading concert halls and festivals. The ensemble has performed at the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the BBC Proms, among others. These performances have been praised for their precision, clarity, and musicality, and have helped to establish the ensemble as one of the most respected period ensembles in the world. Over the years, Collegium Musicum Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. The ensemble has won several Gramophone Awards, as well as the Diapason d'Or and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. These awards are a testament to the ensemble's commitment to excellence and its dedication to historically informed performance. Today, Collegium Musicum Orchestra continues to perform and record music from the Baroque and Classical periods. The ensemble's current members include violinist Midori Seiler, cellist Roel Dieltiens, and flutist Barthold Kuijken. These musicians are carrying on the tradition of historically informed performance that was established by Paul Sacher and his colleagues over 60 years ago, and they are helping to ensure that Collegium Musicum Orchestra remains one of the leading period ensembles in the world.
