Role:ComposerBirth:May 25, 1902 in Helsinki, FinlandDeath:August 12, 1982 in Helsinki, FinlandPeriod:ContemporaryHelvi Leiviskä was a Finnish composer who was born on May 17, 1902, in Helsinki, Finland. She was the daughter of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Her father, Juho Leiviskä, was a well-known composer and conductor in Finland, and her mother, Aino Leiviskä, was a pianist and music teacher. Leiviskä began her musical studies at a young age, studying piano and composition with her father. She later studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where she studied composition with Selim Palmgren and piano with Ernst Linko. She graduated from the academy in 1926 and continued her studies in Paris with Nadia Boulanger. Leiviskä's early works were influenced by the Finnish national romantic style, which was popular in Finland at the time. Her first major work, the orchestral suite "Kalevala," was premiered in 1927 and was based on the Finnish national epic poem of the same name. The work was well-received and established Leiviskä as a promising young composer. In the 1930s, Leiviskä's style began to evolve, and she began to incorporate elements of neoclassicism and modernism into her music. Her works from this period, such as the Piano Sonata No. 1 and the String Quartet No. 1, are characterized by their clarity of form and use of dissonance. During World War II, Leiviskä worked as a nurse in a military hospital in Helsinki. Despite the difficult circumstances, she continued to compose, and her works from this period, such as the Piano Sonata No. 2 and the String Quartet No. 2, are marked by their emotional intensity and introspection. After the war, Leiviskä's music became more experimental, and she began to incorporate elements of serialism and aleatoric music into her works. Her later works, such as the orchestral work "Kuutamo" and the chamber work "Kolme laulua," are characterized by their use of unconventional techniques and their exploration of new sound worlds. Leiviskä was a prolific composer, and her output includes works in a variety of genres, including orchestral works, chamber music, vocal music, and piano music. Her music is characterized by its emotional depth, clarity of form, and innovative use of harmony and texture. Despite her significant contributions to Finnish music, Leiviskä's music was largely overlooked during her lifetime. It was not until after her death in 1982 that her music began to receive the recognition it deserved. Today, her music is performed and recorded by musicians around the world, and she is recognized as one of the most important Finnish composers of the 20th century.More....
